Ian Smith is the Chief Project Engineer for the Trent XWB programme at Rolls-Royce plc, where he leads the technical delivery and product strategy for one of the world’s most successful large civil aero engines powering the Airbus A350. With over 15 years’ experience in gas turbine engineering, Ian has held senior leadership roles across development, certification, and in-service support, with accountability for safety, performance, and commercial outcomes.

He has a strong track record of leading large, cross-functional teams to resolve complex engineering challenges, including pioneering approaches to in-service engine management and lifecycle optimisation. Ian began his career in advanced control systems, contributing to programmes such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II lift system, and has since developed deep expertise across civil aerospace programmes.
